Great Divide St. Bridget’s Porter – Great bottle, Great beer

And the winner of the “Wash away the tears … stupid Cardinals – Best beer of the Super Bowl” award goes to St. Bridget’s Porter by Great Divide. Keep in mind that the review may be tainted by the fact I was pretty well drunk by the time I poured this, but damn if it wasn’t an awesome porter. One of the best I’ve had in recent memory.

I didn’t have a ton of hope with it to tell you the truth. I’m not a huge follower of the brewery, but the semi-truck flap style sillhouette of “St. Bridget” on the bottle grabbed my eye enough to get me to pull it from the shelf and bring it along. When it produces such a happy result, what’s a little objectification between friends.

    Widmer 09 Belgian Ale – Its… Belgian

To Widmer’s credit, this beer tastes exactly as described. A picture perfect Belgian Ale. It even made the immediate area smeel like Belgian beer. Is it good? If you like Belgians, then yeah.

Widmer and I have have a had a rocky past, but I will give them credit for this. It’s probably too specific a taste to be able to get *&@!-faced on, but in terms of drinkability and general yumminess, it is probably the best of the Widmer beers out right now.

Pike Brewing – Kilt Lifter Ruby Ale

I’m not sure who Ruby is, but she’s not in this beer. None the less, this is a good easy drinking beer, that helps me sit through a Madden pregame. And boy does one need help when it comes to that.

Update: Since for the first time in our 130-odd reviews that we had the actual brewer comment on one of our posts, I feel obliged to elaborate just a bit.

Ok, just a little. Although it didn’t have the strong Ruby taste of a McMenamins, the beer itself was very good, and I would certainly buy and drink again. And that folks, is the true measure of any great beer.

Glad you enjoyed our beer. Just an aside, “ruby” refers to the color of the ale; Kilt Lifter is a rich Scotch Ale with hints of lightly peated malt. It is Pike’s most popular beer. At the Pike Pub we offer a sampler of six of our beers from lightest in color to darkest. Pike Naughty Nellie organic golden ale, Pike Pale Ale, Pike IPA, Pike Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale (ruby ale), Pike Tandem Double Ale and Pike XXXXX Extra Stout. Whenever we ask which beer our guests like best, it is almost always #4 Kilt Lifter. We hope you will have an opportunity to visit Pike and our Microbrewery Museum.

Hey, thanks for stopping by! The crew and I will have to take a trip up to Seattle this Summer to check out the Museum and Brewery. Hey you never know, maybe a Kilt Lifter on tap would bump you up to a 5 ;)

Spanish Peaks Brewing Co – Honey Raspberry Ale

Neither overly sweet or raspberry-ey (a phrase coined during pre-SuperBowl conversation today), this stuff isn’t the dog the label imagery may convey.

    It’s actually pretty good.
